I'm an office administrator, not an electrical engineer. I handle purchasing for a 400-person company—roughly $180,000 a year across about a dozen vendors. Lighting is one of those categories I didn't plan on becoming my problem—until it was.
When I took over purchasing in 2020, the first thing I learned was that "lighting" isn't one product category. It's a lot of tiny decisions hidden behind part numbers. So this article starts where most buying decisions start: the questions I put into my own checklist.
1. Is Cooper Lighting a good brand for commercial lighting?

And if a sales rep gives you energy-saving numbers without a test report, I'm careful. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims have to be substantiated. I ask for the photometric test report. That usually ends the conversation one way or another.

The Cooper Lighting layout tool is a free online photometric tool. You enter room dimensions, select a fixture from the Cooper catalog, set a target footcandle level, and it gives you a rough layout and spacing estimate. It's not a substitute for a licensed lighting designer. But it's one of the best ways to avoid buying too many—or too few—fixtures.
Example: a 20-foot x 30-foot break room that everyone described as "dark." The initial instinct was six downlights. I ran the tool with the existing Halo fixture family, entered wall and ceiling reflectances, and it penciled out at five fixtures for around 35 footcandles. I almost ignored it because six sounded safer. Then I had a distributor do a quick calculation. Same result.
We ordered five—no, actually six, because my operations director wanted a brighter corner for the coffee station. But the tool prevented us from going with eight, which is what the "just add lights" instinct would have delivered. Not glamorous. Useful.
One warning: the output is only as good as the information you enter. Wrong ceiling height or reflectance numbers give you a pretty render that looks right and isn't.
3. Which Cooper Lighting brands should I know?
Cooper Lighting Solutions isn't one SKU. It's a portfolio. The two most common in office/commercial work are:
- Halo – recessed downlights and cans. The line most electricians know by name.
- Metalux – linear and panel fixtures, plus wraps and strips for utility spaces. For offices, Metalux panels are everywhere.
- McGraw-Edison – outdoor and area lighting, including some heavy-duty stuff.
The question I ask before ordering: "Is that part number under Cooper Lighting Solutions or one of the legacy brands?" Sometimes the answer changes the warranty and available finishes. If a rep says "we carry Cooper," I ask which line. The difference between a residential-looking downlight and a commercial-grade panel is not obvious from a product photo.
4. Does Cooper Lighting have Zigbee products?
Yes, but not across the board. If you specifically need Zigbee, the Halo Home line is the place to start. That's the connected side of Cooper, and it includes Zigbee-enabled downlights and some controls. If someone tells you "Cooper makes wireless," that doesn't automatically mean Zigbee. Their wireless controls platform, WaveLinx, is more geared to networked commercial control systems and doesn't always speak Zigbee. So ask the exact question: "Which part numbers are Zigbee certified?"
Why does this matter? Because a buyer like me doesn't need another app. I need the fixture to talk to the lighting system we already have. Zigbee is one protocol; it's not the only one. The spec sheet should list the protocol support. If it doesn't, that's a red flag—or at least a phone call.
For a small system, Zigbee can be ideal. For a 400-person office with occupancy sensors and daylighting, the facilities team probably wants a commercial controls system that includes options beyond Zigbee. Know the difference before you buy.
5. How do I choose a Cooper outdoor spotlight?
First, decide if you actually need a spotlight or a floodlight. A spotlight has a narrow beam, typically for accents or signs. A floodlight covers a wider area. The Cooper catalog has both; the mistake is picking a fixture by wattage before looking at the beam spread.
I read the photometric file, not the product photo. The spec sheet will tell you the beam angle and, for larger outdoor fixtures, the NEMA distribution type. If you want to highlight a sign from ground level, a symmetric "spot" beam might be too narrow; it's better to choose a fixture and optic that matches the sign's proportions. For a modern LED spotlight, also check the CCT and a UL Listing for wet locations.
Don't chase lumens alone. Optical design matters more. A 60W fixture with the right optics can do a better job than a 100W wall pack just blasting light sideways. This is from someone who once bought a "bright" spotlight for a dumpster enclosure. It was a spot, not a flood—the photometric file said exactly that. I didn't read it. Read it.
6. Should I pay extra for a lighting distributor's help, or order online?
I have a strong opinion here. If you have a deadline and you need a fixture layout or a substitution to work, pay for the distributor relationship. Not because online pricing is bad—it's often cheaper—but because certainty is worth money when "late" isn't an option.
People think rush orders cost more because they're harder to process. Actually, they cost more because they're unpredictable and disrupt planned workflows. I learned that after a failed vendor in March 2023 missed a move-in date by three days. The vendor had good prices and no local stock. The alternative was a local distributor who could pull inventory and deliver with a proof-of-delivery timestamp. In March 2024, we paid about $400 extra for rush on a set of fixtures. What did we get? A delivery time that didn't move. That's the product.
For basic purchases, order online if you already know the exact part numbers. For anything that needs to occupy a building on a date written in a lease, use someone who will answer the phone after lunch. The conventional wisdom is to always get multiple quotes; my experience with dozens of orders says a solid distributor relationship beats a few percentage points when a deadline is involved.
7. Can bamboo grow in low light? (And why an office admin cares)
Short answer: lucky bamboo can tolerate low light, but "tolerate" and "grow" are not the same thing. If your office corner is under 10 footcandles—essentially dull, shadow-heavy light—the bamboo will stay alive for a while, then slowly get leggy and sad. It won't process enough energy to grow properly.
Why is this in a lighting article? Because I've been asked this exact question by someone who wanted a plant in a windowless waiting area. The real issue wasn't the plant. It was the light level. A plant in "low light" still needs some light. If the room regularly sees under 100 lux, you need to either change the fixture or accept the plant will be a prop.
Cooper's layout tool can calculate average light levels, which is how you make the waiting room "plant-safe" without relying on a sun lamp that looks out of place. The same footcandle data used for task light tells you whether a bamboo planter will thrive or die.
