Recessed Lighting Isn't Outdated. Rushed Retrofits Are.

In my role coordinating emergency lighting orders for commercial clients, I've handled more than 200 rush orders in six years, including same-day turnarounds for hotels and municipal buildings. The pattern is usually the same: someone skipped a verification step, the fixtures arrived, and now the deadline is 48 hours away. So when I hear the question, is recessed lighting outdated?, I tend to answer with another question: did you run a downlight calculator before you made that call?

Recessed lighting isn't outdated. Rushed retrofits are. Not because I'm loyal to a particular fixture type, but because I've seen what happens when people make lighting decisions based on a catalog photo instead of photometric data. At least, that's been my experience with commercial retrofit projects.

The conventional wisdom is wrong—at least for commercial spaces

Everything I'd read over the past few years told me recessed lighting was on its way out, pushed aside by surface-mounted LED panels and linear fixtures. In practice, that's true in some office and retail settings. But it's not the whole story. Modern LED downlights from Cooper Lighting's Halo line include interchangeable trims, tunable white, and reflector optics that didn't exist a decade ago. A well-specified recessed downlight can deliver low-glare, even illumination that's hard to match with a simple surface fixture.

I say this from experience: I've made the opposite mistake too. In my first year, I assumed a 6-inch downlight was a 6-inch downlight, and it cost me a $600 redo on a lobby install. That's why I now treat a downlight calculator as a non-negotiable step on any order larger than a few fixtures.

Outdoor downlight projects are even worse when rushed

Outdoor downlight applications seem to attract even more guesswork. Last year, a parking canopy project called me because newly installed fixtures left dark zones in the far lane. The original spec simply said LED wall packs—no distribution type, no spacing criteria. But isn't surface-mounted easier?

Sometimes, yes. If there's no plenum space, or if the ceiling is under 8 feet, a surface-mounted fixture or a slim panel is often the smarter choice. I've specified those too. What I push back on is the word outdated. Recessed lighting isn't obsolete just because it needs planning. Surface fixtures still require layout calculations—you just notice the problems sooner because they hang lower into the space.

There's also a cost angle people forget. If a building already has recessed cans, tearing them out and patching the ceiling often costs more than updating the trims and drivers inside. Run a downlight calculator first. Sometimes the existing layout is perfectly serviceable; it just needs a different reflector or color temperature.

Before you call for help, try the calculator

Recessed lighting is not the enemy

Recessed lighting isn't outdated. Outdated is skipping the math. Outdated is treating the customer-service phone number as the first step instead of the last. Outdated is assuming a fixture type is bad because someone didn't plan the layout.

My job is emergency fixes, and I'll admit I'm good at them. But the best emergency is the one you don't need. Spend five minutes with a downlight calculator. Check the photometric data before you order. Your future self—and your budget—will thank you.
