The Surface Problem: It Looks Like Bad Hardware
In March 2023, I signed off on a $4,600 outdoor lighting job. Two months later, we were back with a ladder, a new driver, and a $300 service call. The LED wall pack that was supposed to save us money had failed. The finish around the gasket was peeling. And the chandelier over the side entrance looked like it had been dragged through a salt bath.
I say this as a procurement manager at a 40-person facilities company. At first, the problem seems obvious: bad fixtures. But over time, I’ve realized the fixture is rarely the real issue. The issue is how we choose it.
The fixture isn’t the product. The lighting system is. If you don’t design the system, you pay for the mistake twice.

The Deep Cause: We’re Buying Light, Not a System
Here’s what took me too long to understand: a lighting fixture is not a commodity. It’s a system made up of the LED source, driver, thermal management, optics, gaskets, and mounting. If any one of those pieces is weak, the whole fixture fails. When you buy on upfront price alone, you’re gambling that all six pieces are okay. In my experience, that’s a bad bet.

Then there’s the “let’s just paint it” move. Honestly, I don’t blame facility managers who ask about painting an outdoor fixture instead of replacing it. The cost difference is real. But painting over a failing finish is a temporary fix. And doing it without taking the fixture down makes it harder to prep properly. I’m not 100% sure why some contractors still recommend it. My best guess is they’re trying to avoid the labor and the risk of removing a heavy fixture. But the paint will only last if the surface is clean, scuffed, and dry.
What the Problem Actually Costs

How to Paint Outdoor Light Fixture Without Taking It Down
If you’re determined to avoid the ladder-and-drop-cloth dance, here’s the process that has worked for me. Turn off power. Clean the fixture with a degreaser. Scuff the surface with 220-grit sandpaper or a scotch-brite pad. Rinse it and let it dry completely. Mask the lens, the photocell, and any sensors. Apply an exterior metal primer, then two light coats of exterior enamel. Don’t paint over the driver vents or the gasket.
Will it look perfect? Probably not. Will it buy you a season or two? Yes—if the fixture itself is still in good shape. But if the driver is already failing, painting is just rearranging deck chairs. Replace the fixture, and save the paint for the building trim.
Bottom line: the problem is rarely just one bad fixture. It’s the decision process that keeps buying bad fixtures. Fix that, and your lighting jobs get cheaper. That’s the cost-control lesson I keep coming back to.
