When someone asks me how to replace a downlight bulb, the honest answer usually goes like this: shut the circuit off, lower the trim (springs or screws), pull the lamp or module, and check the model number stamped inside the housing before you buy the replacement. The last part is the one people skip, and it's the one that causes the wrong-part run.
The replacement path isn't just about the bulb, though. It's about the housing, the trim, the driver, and whether you can reach any of them once the ceiling is closed. That's why I now put a one-line replacement reference on every fixture schedule: trim part number, lamp part number, model number location. Nothing fancy.
The third time a facility manager called us asking "what bulb goes in this thing?" I finally added that line to our schedule. Should have done it after the first time.
Most Halo housings make this easy — the stamping is right on the inside of the housing. But "most" is not "all." And when you're dealing with a niche product like a mini spotlight intended for a display case, the replacement part is even less obvious. Cooper's engineering and manufacturing teams do solid work — UL 1598 compliance, DLC listings, all the certifications you'd expect from a major commercial lighting manufacturer. I'm not going to pretend I've never seen a bad batch; that happens across the industry. But the QA side is generally strong.
Last year, I reviewed a spec that looked perfect on paper — right voltage, right lumen output, right color temperature, DLC listed, everything. It still had to be sent back because the fixture was rated for a 32°F minimum operating temperature, and the installation was in an unconditioned parking garage in Minnesota. The fixture was fine. The application was wrong.

But the name on the box isn't the deliverable. Verification is.
