Cooper Lighting Solutions After Eaton: A Maintenance Pro’s Checklist

If you’re about to buy, repair, or specify anything labeled Cooper Lighting, check the manufacturer of record first. Cooper Lighting Solutions LLC is now a Signify business, not an Eaton business. That change happened in 2020, and it explains a lot of the confusing listings, warranty questions, and replacement part problems I see in the field. I’ve paid this lesson out of my own maintenance budget, so let me save you the same invoice.

I manage lighting maintenance for a commercial property portfolio. In the past seven years, I’ve made and documented 14 significant mistakes that cost roughly $22,000 in wasted budget. Most of them trace back to one simple failure: I trusted a product name without checking the company behind it. Now I keep a checklist, and the first item on that checklist is always this.

The company behind the name changed. The labels didn’t all catch up.

Cooper Lighting has had three practical phases:

  • Cooper era: Cooper Industries owned and assembled lighting brands like Halo, Metalux, Sure-Lites, and others.
  • Eaton era (2012–2020): Eaton acquired Cooper Industries, which is why you still see the phrase Cooper Lighting Eaton.
  • Signify era (2020–present): Eaton sold the lighting business to Signify. The current business name is Cooper Lighting Solutions LLC.

Why does this matter on an actual job? If an online page still says Cooper Lighting Eaton, it may be old stock, an old data sheet, or just a listing that was never updated. Sometimes the fixture on that page has been superseded twice since then. The seller isn’t necessarily lying. Usually they’re showing stale content, and stale content costs money when you order the wrong generation.

I remember one order where the search result said Cooper Lighting Eaton and the photo looked exactly like the fixture I needed. It arrived with an old driver that didn’t work with the new control system. The product was real; the spec sheet was outdated. That’s when I started asking the seller, “Is this current?” instead of trusting the page.

Don’t order “a fixture light” until you know which part you mean

I hear fixture light used two ways. Some tenants mean the whole fixture. Others mean the bulb, LED module, driver, lens, or light source. In the lighting trade, the fixture is the complete housing and wiring assembly. The replaceable light source inside it is the lamp or LED module. If I asked a distributor for a fixture light, they would probably ask which part, and you should too.

This is not just word games. LED fixtures often have separate components: a driver can fail while the LED board still works. Replacing an entire fixture because a small component burned out is wasteful. A fixture light burned out report can lead to an unnecessary fixture replacement when the real issue was a driver, a bad connection, or a battery.

Spotlight battery failures are usually battery problems, not fixture problems

The phrase spotlight battery shows up a lot in my search logs. In commercial buildings, I see it two ways: portable rechargeable spotlights used for inspections, and emergency lighting units that run a small spotlight head off a battery backup. Both fail the same way. The battery ages, the light won’t hold a charge, and somebody assumes the whole unit is dead.

Many emergency light batteries are designed to be replaced. They’re also the first component to fail in a fixture that is otherwise fine. Before replacing an entire emergency fixture, I do a few checks:

  1. Confirm incoming power is present and the charging circuit is active.
  2. Let the battery charge for 24 hours and test it under load.
  3. Check the battery’s rated voltage and connector type.
  4. If the charger works and the battery won’t hold a charge, replace the battery.

My worst lesson in this area was an order of 14 replacement batteries. I had the correct unit model number, but I didn’t confirm the connector style. Some production runs used a different terminal connector even though the battery voltage was the same. Every battery was the wrong connector. That was roughly $500 in parts that I couldn’t use.

I now keep the risk calculation simple. Six emergency units with dead batteries would cost around $1,000 to replace. Replacement batteries were around $210 if I chose correctly. Worst case: I wait two weeks and still replace the fixtures. Best case: I save about $800. The downside felt risky, so I tested one unit’s charging circuit first. When the charger was obviously working and the only failure was the battery, I ordered the replacement. It worked. The lesson is not “always replace the battery.” The lesson is to test before making a decision.

What is a neutral wire in a light switch? The short version

A neutral wire is the return path for current in a typical 120V lighting circuit. Power comes from the panel on a hot wire, goes through the switch or fixture, and returns to the panel on the neutral wire. The neutral is what completes the circuit.

Here’s the confusing part. A basic light switch does not need a neutral in the switch box because it only opens or closes the hot wire. That’s why an older switch box might contain only a couple of black or white wires and a ground. If you’re swapping the switch with another standard switch, no neutral is required. If you’re installing a smart switch, sensor, or lighting control, the device itself uses a little power all the time, and that power needs a return path. Most such devices require a neutral wire in the box.

Don’t assume every white wire is a neutral. In older switch loops, the white wire can be used as a switched hot. Use a voltage tester before labeling anything. If you’re not comfortable testing live wires, stop and call an electrician. This is not a place to guess.

What if the switch box has no neutral?

There are options. An electrician can run a new neutral from a nearby fixture or from the panel. A no-neutral control rated for LED loads may work, but you have to read the compatibility specs carefully. Another path is to put the control at the fixture and leave the wall switch simple. I don’t have one universal answer because the right choice depends on your wiring. I do know this: it is better to ask about neutral before you buy controls than after the drywall is closed. I’ve learned to ask what’s not included before I ask about price. The vendor who lists requirements upfront, even when the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end.

My checklist for any Cooper Lighting purchase

  1. Identify the manufacturer of record. For products made after 2020, that’s Cooper Lighting Solutions LLC under Signify. Older units may legitimately say Eaton.
  2. Confirm the current part number from a current catalog or datasheet, not from a stale listing.
  3. Clarify what fixture light means in the request: complete fixture, lamp, LED module, driver, sensor, or battery.
  4. If the light is battery-powered or an emergency unit, test the charging circuit and battery before ordering a spotlight battery.
  5. Before ordering controls or smart switches, verify whether a neutral wire exists in the switch box. Note: a white wire is not automatically a neutral.
  6. Document the support path. For a new Cooper Lighting Solutions product, that path is through Cooper Lighting Solutions LLC / Signify, not Eaton. For older Eaton-era stock, start with the distributor and request a clear replacement part number before approving the order.

Where this approach has limits

This checklist is aimed at replacement and small retrofit decisions. If you’re designing a new lighting system from scratch, you need photometric layouts, control sequences, code review, and submittals. I don’t design systems; I work with the people who install and maintain them. But on the practical side, the same questions still apply: who made this fixture, what does the label actually say, what part is dead, and what does the circuit need before you connect it.
